Open for Summer!
Most shops, hotels and restaurants on the beautiful Cycladic island of Mykonos open from May and close at the end of October. July and August is peak season, when hotel rates may double. While the season’s bookend months of May and October are the quietest and cheapest.
Check out my Mykonos Guide for more information on the island’s top beaches and restaurants. As well as this post on what to pack.

Choosing your Neighbourhood
The three best places to stay are in Mykonos Town, near one of the southern beaches, or between the two in the quieter neighbourhoods of Ornos and Agios Ioannis. Be wary of villas outside of these areas, as they may be rather difficult to reach. Also avoid villas that are high up from sea level with expansive sea views due to frequent strong winds.
- Mykonos Town: Best for those that want to stay in the centre and not worry about transport at the end of the night
- The South: Best for quick trips, romantic getaways and staying next to your favourite beach
- Ornos/Agios Ioannis: Best for families and groups, long-stays and exploring the island

Agios Ioannis Mykonos
Agios Ioannis (Saint John)
My favourite neighbourhood is Agios Ioannis because the location is perfect. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Mykonos Town, but still away from the town centre action. It has two fantastic beaches, Agios Ioannis and Kapari, and is southwest-facing. Great for enjoying those famous Mykonian sunsets. Ornos is just 2-minutes away, where you can find supermarkets, cafes and more restaurants.
There are plenty of hotels to choose from, each with a restaurant on site, in addition to a number of private villas for rent. Delight, Hippie Chic and Bill & Coo Coast Suites are the best 5-star hotels. While Bellissimo Resort and Manoula’s are top 4-star choices. Agios Ioannis is also home to Hippie Fish, the popular beach bar and restaurant where the Paramount classic movie Shirley Valentine was filmed – and where I got married!

Hotel or Villa?
Hotels are ideally suited for couples and small groups of up to 3-4 people. Villas are often a better option for groups of 4 or more. Although a villa won’t have room service, there are perks such as a private pool and kitchen instead.
The best villa in Agios Ioannis is Bougain Villa, a beautiful summer house that was renovated in 2017. The villa caters up to 6 guests, with 3 en-suite bedrooms and a large, private pool, perfect for families or groups of friends. Moreover, the house is equipped with everything you need to enjoy your summer vacation, from JBL portable speakers to a BBQ, pool floaties and even a PlayStation for the kids.
