1. Hundertwasserhaus
This quirky apartment house attracts a lot of insta-visitors! It was built in 1985 and designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser with architect Joseph Krawina. Additionally, check out the Kunst Huis Wien museum next door, featuring Hundertwasser’s artworks.
–
2. Traffic Lights of Love
These loved up pedestrian traffic lights are so adorable! Just be extra careful when taking your photo while crossing the road.

3. Hofburg Imperial Palace
With 3 museums, 18 wings, 19 courtyards, 2600 rooms and endless photo opportunities, this former principal residence of the Habsburg dynasty is one of the biggest palace complexes in the world. You can tour the grounds, visit one of the museums, or check out the horses in the Spanish Riding School.

4. Spanish Riding School
Catch a performance or watch the morning exercises of the world-famous Lipizzan horses at the Hofburg Imperial Palace. Alternatively, you can also see horses on the streets nearby, and ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages.

5. Belvedere Palace
There are in fact two Belvedere palaces separated by a gorgeous garden, with the Upper Palace housing the largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings in the world. In case you get hungry, there is a very popular restaurant next door called Salm Bräu, as mentioned in my Vienna City Guide.
–
6. Rose Garden at Schönbrunn Palace
You’ll probably have to get in line to photograph this stunning rose garden found to the right of the Schönbrunn Palace, where a little patience goes a long way. It’s simply beautiful any time of year, but extra special when the roses are in bloom, and when the leaves fall in autumn.
–
7. The Palmenhaus at Schönbrunn Palace
The Palmenhaus at Schönbrunn Palace is stunning both inside and out. Photograph the iconic structure framed among the trees or look out for the spiral white staircases inside.

8. Gloriette at Schönbrunn Palace
The Gloriette is located behind the Schönbrunn Palace, up the hill through the central gardens. Aim for a clear day when visibility is at its best.
–
9. Das Loft at Sofitel Hotel
The colourful ceiling of the Das Loft restaurant at the SO Hotel is a work of art and the perfect insta-backdrop.
–
10. Sachetorte at the Sacher Cafe
Every cafe in Vienna makes their own insta-worthy cakes, however, for the original Sachertorte, you have to visit the Sacher Cafe. The cafe is part of the hotel, which also has a beautiful blue room to seek out.
–
11. Cafe Central
The tall pillars and friendly service inside this Viennese cafe make it one of the most popular in the city. Prices are good and the cakes are lush.
–
12. Naschmarkt
This is Vienna’s biggest market, selling all sorts of things. Get lost between the stalls and don’t come here on a full stomach, as there is a lot to try!

13. Vienna State Opera
Vienna’s State Opera is another iconic building that is beautiful inside and out. Even if you don’t plan on attending a performance, it’s still worth taking a look around inside.
–
14. The National Library
Instagram seems to have a thing with libraries and this one is no exception. The State Hall National Library is one of the biggest baroque libraries in Europe – almost 80 m long and 20 m high – and also one of the most beautiful. The ceiling is crowned by a dome decorated with frescoes by painter Daniel Gran.
–
15. Museums Quartier (MQ)
Look up as you walk under the painted arches of the Museums Quartier, where you’ll find lots and lots of, you guessed it, museums.
–
16. Karlskirche
Easily recognised from the two spiral columns outside, Karskirche will blow you away with its 70 m high painted dome. However, entrance to this church is not free.
–
17. St Stephen’s Cathedral
Considered one of the most beautiful churches in the world and one of the most iconic buildings of Vienna. A visit is an absolute must. You can visit for free or pay to ride one of the lifts up to the top for some spectacular views over the city.
–
18. Peterskirche
Thought to be the oldest church in Vienna, this is the most popular shot of the Baroque Roman Catholic church, how it stands out between the buildings on Graben Street.
–
19. Ferstel Passage
The restaurant and shop-lined Ferstel Passage is a beautiful upscale marble arcade easily found nearby the famous Cafe Central.
–
20. Christmas markets
Vienna has some of Europe’s best Christmas markets and I suggest visiting as many of them as possible both during the day and night.
